Have you thought about the classroom potential of Fashion Less Waste, the Museum's fashion design competition?
Fashion Less Waste lends itself well to a class activity. We've received some fabulous class sets of FLW entries from teachers in past years. In some sets, each student had made an entry; in others, there was an entry per pair of students.
FLW has relevance to the curriculum of various art and design subjects. Those NSW outcomes that might be met as students design and/or make their outfit entries are:
FLW also has superb potential for a cross-curricular activity with Science, for FLW celebrates and encourages the way that artists and designers often draw inspiration from the natural world.
Each year FLW has a natural history theme in connection to an upcoming Museum exhibition – in 2012 it's Deep Oceans... Entrants are invited to make an outfit inspired by creatures from the deep, and to make that inspiration visible in their entry – in shape, colour, texture, or maybe a manner of moving. On their entry form, students will explain how the inspiring animal or animals has influenced their entry.
Students need to research animals from the deep ocean, and select one or more to focus on. Their choices are wide: animals that are known to exist and are named; or animals that students imagine will be discovered, given what they know of the deep ocean environment and animal adaptations to it; or animals that are known from myth. This research could be undertaken in a Science class, if you wish FLW to be cross-curricular.
Students need to become familiar with the physical nature of 'their' animal or animals - its shapes, colours etc. They could also find out how it moves and behaves more generally. For ideas: some past entries have referenced the materials that an animal makes its ‘home’ from; some past finalists have mimicked the manner of movement of their inspiration during the FLW parade.
On 26th July we will have a Teachers’ Preview Night. A special feature of this night will be a parade of the FLW finalists. In past years, some proud teachers have attended this night to watch the parade, and to accompany and assist their students.
There might also be ways to display FLW entries at your school. We know of teachers who have organised a FLW parade for their school assembly. Or perhaps there could be a display of selected entries – a display of the entries themselves, or of photographs of them. If one of your students is a finalist, you could even display photographs from the FLW parade at the Museum.
Why not bring Fashion Less Waste to your classroom? Entries are due 8 May.
