Whale Hero Image
This striking image of a humpback whale calf was taken by Australian photographer Jem Cresswell as part of his Giants series, where he explores the awe-inspiring behaviours and undeniable anthropomorphism of the humpback whale.
Words by Kelly Richman-Abdou.
Māori Background Pattern
To honour the Māori legacy of the exhibition, the Australian Museum Pacific Collections team and Lee Watt, a specialist Māori designer collaborated to develop a bespoke pattern which tells a story:
Nga Tamariki a Tangaroa
(The progeny of Tangaroa - deity of the oceans)
This original pattern composed with the Mangopare (hammerhead shark) motif represents the multiple progeny of Tangaroa. The larger centre motif depicts the Tohorā and celebrates its sheer scale and beauty
